Reading about different cultures is eye-opening and can be enjoyable, but the content of this book is bleak. We agreed that the author did an excellent job of parceling out the details of traumatic events happening to the main characters. That kept us reading and added to the development of the characters, mostly women.
The written Jamaican Patois was a bit challenging to read and many of us found it easier to read some parts of the book aloud in order to understand. One book club member listened to the audiobook which she enjoyed immensely. When we looked at a sample of the written Patois she said, “Apparently, I made the right choice to listen to it!”
Our group lamented that there were no healthy relationships in this book at all. The men used the women and girls as sex objects and the women weren’t immune to cruelty, either. This characters in this book experience child abuse, prostitution, and brutality of all kinds. The characters were well-developed and even if we didn’t understand them or like them we had a good conversation about the sad complexities of their lives.
